About the Artist

Jane Flewellen

Artist Statement

I paint because I love beauty and light. While we experience difficulties and pain in life, we can also have pleasure, respite, and joy in beauty. Inspiration comes when something remarkable catches my eye… I’ll think, “Wow, I want to paint THAT!” My oil paintings capture these visually unique moments to share with others. I’m often drawn to depicting light contrasting with darkness. I suppose this subconsciously symbolizes hope for me.

Natural subjects, especially landscapes and people, are my favorites. Having grown up in the densely-wooded hills of New York, I love trees and clouds. The nuances of color and the exquisite interplay of lines, shapes and values are intriguing. While often painting from photographs, I am also exploring the challenge of painting from direct observation of figures, still lifes and en plein air. Columbus Metro Parks, the Ohio landscape, my neighborhood, and vacations to Canada, Maine, Italy and Scotland inspire me.

Since childhood, Jane has loved art and drawing. Growing up near New York City exposed her to great art. In high school, she received college-level art instruction from a superb teacher. Jane pursued a Fine Arts major at the University of Michigan, concentrating on painting and drawing.

Her award-winning paintings have been juried in the Zanesville Museum of Art, the Ohio State Fair (professional division), the Ohio Percent for Art Program, and numerous other exhibits in Ohio, Indiana and Virginia. Her paintings have been in solo, two-person and invitational exhibits. Sharon Weiss Gallery represents her work in Columbus, Ohio.

Jane lives with her wonderful husband, Jim, in Worthington, Ohio.
